Hobbies

  • Reading
Fiction - my favourites are crime, sci-fi, historical novels, thrillers.
Crime is an especial favourite - Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, Ellis Peters, Peter Tremayne, Susanna Gregory, Inspector Morse.
    Paul Doherty, Sherlock Holmes
    Sci-fi - Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, H. G. Wells
Alexander Dumas, Count of Monte Christo and Conan Doyle's non-detective writings also super.
I have also enjoyed Alistair Maclean, and the Saint books.
I read Day of the Jackal two years ago, and have re-read it 4 or 5 times. The film of the book is also super.
  • Chess - I last played serious chess aged 14-18 in Sri Lanka in national tournaments; since then only friendlies, and a few chess computers.
Recently discovered the pleasure of chess by e-mail - playing with Sean Harley. This is a very flexible wayy of playing, as both of us sometimes move several times a day and sometimes the gap can be days or weeks on rare occasions.
  • Walks - seaside/hills. I love walking in the Purbeck Hills - fortunately still undiscovered by the tourist industry. I walk both for recreation and daily exercise.
I recently spent a lovely walking weekend on Exmoor - I have never been there before, and I think it beats the Lake District!
